A Workshop Built Around the Movement

Pelangi began as a single bench and a clear intention: to attend to watches and clocks with the same care their makers put into them.

Our Story

From a Single Bench in Shah Alam

Pelangi was established in Shah Alam by a horologist who had spent years training under watchmakers in both Malaysia and abroad before returning home to open a dedicated repair workshop. The name — meaning rainbow in Malay — reflects the way light diffracts through the crystal of a fine watch, scattering into colour. That image sits at the centre of how the workshop approaches each piece.

The workshop handles mechanical and quartz movements of various calibres, along with mantel clocks that often carry family significance. Each piece is treated as an individual object rather than a unit of throughput. The work takes the time it takes.

Clients range from collectors building a well-worn everyday watch back to reliable use, to families bringing in an inherited mantel clock that has stood silent for years. The workshop is small by design, which keeps the focus where it belongs — on the movement itself.

How We Work

The standards that guide each service, from the initial assessment to the moment of collection.

Assessment First

Every piece is examined before any work begins. The service scope and cost are discussed and agreed with the client before committing.

Timing Machine Measurement

Regulation results are measured and recorded on a timing machine across multiple positions, not estimated by feel.

Water Resistance Check

Crown and stem replacements include a water resistance check on suitable cases to confirm the seal after new components are fitted.

Test Run for Clocks

Mantel clocks run for several days on the bench after service to confirm reliable timekeeping before they are returned.

No Unauthorised Scope Changes

If a movement requires work beyond what was agreed, the client is contacted before anything additional is undertaken.

Appropriate Component Sourcing

Parts are selected to match the original calibre. For vintage pieces, period-correct or well-matched alternatives are sourced where possible.

The Character of the Workshop

Watch repair done well is a slow and deliberate discipline. A movement may contain more than a hundred components, each interacting with others across tolerances of a few hundredths of a millimetre. Pelangi holds that the only way to serve such objects is to give them time — time to examine, time to work, time to observe after the work is complete.

This is not a high-volume operation, and that is a considered position. The workshop takes on a number of pieces at any one time that it can attend to properly, rather than processing more work at a pace that compromises the result.

There is also a particular interest in older pieces — watches and clocks whose movements were made before the era of disposable calibres. These objects often hold meaning for their owners that extends well beyond their function as timekeepers. The workshop approaches them accordingly.

Clients receive a clear account of what was found, what was done, and what to expect going forward. Nothing in the communication or the work is left vague. That is, simply, the standard the workshop holds itself to.
